Arsenal proved to be a stern test for Manchester City as Mikel Arteta took on his former boss Pep Guardiola but they couldn't do enough to earn a share of the spoils.

Man City edged to a narrow yet comfortable win over Arsenal at The Etihad thanks to a first-half Raheem Sterling goal.

The hosts dominating the opening 45 minutes and forced Gunners keeper Bernd Leno into several saves. One of those was from Phil Foden after the midfielder had skipped inside Hector Bellerin, but Leno couldn't hold, allowing Sterling to finish off the rebound.

Leno was called into action to deny Foden again soon after, while Riyad Mahrez was a constant threat all evening.

Just as City's lead looked secure ahead of the break, Arsenal stepped up a gear, and Leno's opposite number Ederson was kept busy with a flurry of chances.

The Brazilian was on hand to deny the lively Bukayo Saka, whose shot clipped off Ederson's shoulder diverting it over the bar.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was then played in by the toe of Nicolas Pepe after Granit Xhaka's fizzing pass, only for his shot to be charged down by City's stopper.

The linesmans flag had already gone up but Ederson wasn't to know, and VAR would have overturned the decision had Aubameyang scored as he'd stayed onside.

Arsenal then had a penalty appeal turned down on the stroke of half-time as Kyle Walker's high foot went unpunished by the referee. Defender Gabriel challenged for a corner with his head but Walker's boot was dangerously close, though nothing was given.

While the end of the first half held plenty of promise for Arsenal, they failed to build on it in the second as they struggled to muster any real chances of note.

Their best opportunity was a free-kick from outside the box which was disappointingly fired over by David Luiz. New signing Thomas Partey was introduced late on for his debut, but by then Arsenal had largely been killed off, with City able to see out the dying minutes with relative ease to claim all three points.

Neither side were anywhere near their best, and there seemed to be plenty of rust after the international break. Arsenal threatened to level things up at the end of the first half but failed to build on that in the second, and were eventually unable to muster any real chances of note.

A comfortable win for City, though there will be positives for Arteta to take from this display on his old stomping ground. Arsenal making a late push.

Fernandinho is coming on now in place of Foden. City looking to see this one out with just minutes remaining. The game plays on but it comes to nothing.

Not the greatest effort and it is indeed his last action of the game as Nketiah comes on in his place. Superb play by Joao Cancelo as he squirms away from Tierney before firing a cross along the side yard box.

Sterling will now play through the middle in attack, seemingly to push Foden forward on the left side. Gundogan is about to come on as a substitute and Arsenal should perhaps consider making one too if they are to overturn the deficit.

Mahrez still a danger for Arsenal as he cuts in again on that left foot and shoots for the far corner.

Tierney then lobs one over Ederson but just misses the crossbar as it nestles on the roof of the net. Arsenal could be forced into a change immediately after half-time here as Pepe is down with an injury.

Arsenal have Bernd Leno to thank for keeping them within a goal but Ederson has also had some work at the other end to keep him busy.

Manchester City got back to winning ways in the Premier League after Raheem Sterling's first-half goal handed them a victory over Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium.

City, who had won just four points from their first three league games this season, took the lead in the 23rd minute when Sterling swept home the rebound after Bernd Leno kept out Phil Foden's initial shot.

Arsenal, who made a late change before kick-off with David Luiz replacing the injured Rob Holding, had their chances but Ederson made crucial saves to deny Bukayo Saka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The hosts struggled to kill the game off and the Gunners handed a debut to Deadline Day signing Thomas Partey late on as they searched for an equaliser, but there was no way through for Mikel Arteta's side as City held on for a confidence-boosting win.

Pep Guardiola's team, who still have a game in hand, move up to 10th on seven points after a seventh straight Premier League win over Arsenal, while the Gunners stay fifth on nine points.

City started firmly on the front foot as Riyad Mahrez bent a shot narrowly wide with less than a minute on the clock before teeing up Sergio Aguero, who headed over moments later.

The hosts eventually took the lead in the 23rd minute and the returning Aguero was involved again. The Argentina striker latched onto Mahrez's inch-perfect pass before feeding Foden.

The England midfielder cut inside Hector Bellerin before seeing his shot was parried by Leno, but the rebound fell kindly for Sterling to side-foot home.

Arsenal tried to find an instant response as Saka created shooting space, but his effort was pushed over before Nicolas Pepe headed Willian's cross wide.

Leno then had to be at his best to stop Foden adding to City's advantage after they capitalised on a loose pass by Gabriel, but the Gunners took encouragement as they finished the half stronger.

Ederson was forced into a brilliant save to deny Saka, who saw his shot truned over the crossbar by the goalkeeper, and he had to make himself big once again to deny Aubameyang - with replays showing the Gabon forward was onside even as the flag went up.
